“The Enneagram, in its most abstract form, is a universal mandala of the self – a symbol of each of us.”
– Don Richard Riso
The Enneagram offers us the possibility to change our perception of ourselves, to bring more meaning, awareness, kindness, and confidence to it. It helps us objectively observe ourselves, understand our origins, realize our full potential, and progress towards a better life and world. It is a tool of self-observation that allows us to see beyond our masks and appearances.
Discover the Enneagram, a valuable tool for self-knowledge and personal transformation with ancient origins. It has been passed down by figures such as Pythagoras, the Desert Fathers, the Sufis, and Evagre the Pontic. In the 20th century, Georges Gurdjieff introduced it to the West, followed by Oscar Ichazo. Claudio Naranjo shaped it, and Helen Palmer made it accessible to the general public.
Today, the Enneagram is recognized for its power in personal development and understanding others. It consists of nine personality types but becomes more complex when considering wings, arrows, and subtypes.
This tool helps us gain insights into personality, see reality from different perspectives, understand profiles, and harness our potential. It invites us to change our perspective on ourselves and others to establish more just relationships.
The Enneagram symbol itself is ancient and represents three fundamental figures: the circle (unity/wholeness), the triangle (triad/trinity), and the hexad (laws of seven). From the Greek “ennea” (ἐννέα = nine) and “gramma” (γράμμα = sign), the Enneagram categorizes people into nine different personality types based on their talents and strengths, emotional needs, and fundamental fears. Each archetype is represented by a number and a name, providing information about each individual’s strengths, weaknesses, and potential areas for personal growth.
The nine “enneatypes” are considered general models of behavior and personality, each defined by a unique combination of personality traits, emotional habits, motivations, fears, and ideals. These types are typically described in terms of their lifestyle, thought patterns, emotional functioning, and typical behaviors.
The nine points of the Enneagram represent the strengths we carry, and the system helps us recognize and rebalance them. It is based on understanding personality from three axes: body, emotion, and mind.
